Philippines, Uzbekistan in Finals of Asian Games

The Philippine men’s team and Uzbekistan women’s teams upset highly rated Indian men and women, respectively, in the Asian Games Semifinals in Guangzhou, China. The Chinese stormed into the finals as their men’s team beat Iran 2.5 – 1.5 with Wang Hao winning his game against Mahjooob Morteza as all the other boards ended in draws.

In the other other Semifinals, Philippines beat India 2.5 – 1.5. despite the star Filipino player Wesley So losing to Harikrishna on top Board. GM Rogelio Antonio Jr. quickly restored hope as he beat Sasikiran on board two. Asia’s first Grandmaster, Eugene Torre, followed with a win over Gopal on board 4. It was left up to GM John Paul Gomez to seal the win by claiming a draw by 3-time repetition of position against Ganguly.

In the women’s division, Uzbekistan beat India 2.5 – 1.5. with Harika (India) winning the top board battle against Muminova Nafisa and Tania (India) drawing her game. Uzbekistan’s victory came through Hamrakulova Yulduz & Nodirjanova Nodira who scored full points.

Chinese women defeated Vietnam 3.5 – .5, the only board to end in a draw was between WGM Ju Wenjum (China) and WIM Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Vietnam. Hou Yifan, Zhao and Huang Qian won their games.

China will take on the Philippines in the Men & Uzbekistan in the women’s sections in the finals. For the Bronze medal matches India will play Iran in the Men’s section and Vietnam in the women section.
