Jaya Inaugurates Projects for School Sector

Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has inaugurated a number of projects aimed at bolstering infrastructure and quality in the State-run school education sector.

Among the projects inaugurated were new school buildings, classrooms, libraries, special library sections for children and differently abled students, an English diction training module for teachers, assistance scheme for children who have lost an earning parent, improved monitoring system for district libraries and an Internet programme to deliver last mile connectivity between teachers and students in remote areas.

The CM inaugurated office buildings and gave away prizes to winners of chess competitions.

New buildings, constructed at a cost of `2.95 crore in Mathur of Erode district, were inaugurated. Additional classrooms, science labs and compound walls in 109 schools in 20 districts, constructed at `97.64 crore were also inaugurated.

Jayalalithaa also inaugurated special sections for children and differently abled students at the Coimbatore District Library, set up at a cost of `60 lakh.

The administrative setup of the State-run machinery also received a fillip, with the inauguration of the new Kallakurichi Education District along with its office complex, and an integrated office complex to house the various branches of the District Education Office in Tirunelveli.

She also presented deposit amounts of `50,000 each to 360 students, as part of a government scheme to ensure the continued education of students who had lost an earning parent. The scheme, instituted by the previous Jayalalithaa government, has seen 720 students benefit to the tune of `3.6 crore in the first two years of the present government.

Jayalalithaa representatively handed over appointment orders to 593 senior Tamil teachers, who have been selected by the Teachers Recruitment Board. A statement from the government said orders had been passed for the filling of 71,526 vacant teachers’ posts since the AIADMK came to power in 2011, and that 52,417 of these had been successfully filled.

Jayalalithaa launched a project to connect teachers and students of remote areas through the Internet. The scheme ‘Collaborative Learning through Connecting Classrooms’ is being implemented in 288 schools in the first phase, and is expected to benefit 44,800 students, at a cost of `24.06 lakh.

Jayalalithaa representatively gave away prizes to the winners of chess competitions held by the government across the State for schoolchildren.

A total of 11,25,628 students had participated in the competitions and Jayalalithaa handed over the prizes to the top three in four age groups — 11, 14, 17 and 19 years.

The cash prizes were `1,200 for first place, `800 for second place and `400 for the third place.
