‘Chess will unlock potential in CT kids’
Sunday, June 24, 2012

CAPE TOWN – Research shows that chess has helped children deal with their anger, a Cape Town-based chess organisation said.

Moves for Life on Saturday launched a chess programme in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, in the hope of helping children deal with social problems in that community.

The Western Cape coordinator for the organisation, Hannes Pieterse, said the game assists people to channel their energy in the right direction.

“On a chess board, it’s actually war.”

Pieterse said children channel undisciplined anger into the game and realise there are ways one can release anger in a controlled environment.

He said the game can also teach children several life lessons.

The programme will be used as a key to unlock great potential within children from Khayelitsha, Pieterse added.

Moves for Life is active in townships and rural areas across the country.
