I read it in several variations attributed to players in the 19th century. Alexandre Deschapelles was quoted to have said (own translation): Freeing your game is best done by taking off some pieces of your opponent from the board.
Maybe this is not true. But surely it’s a well known joke in the old days of chess. You will find it ascribed to loads of masters, simply because it is true. 😉
