DNEPROPETROVSK, Ukraine – This week in the east Ukrainian city of Dnepropetrovsk, the Jewish Community Center hosted a major children’s chess tournament. According to the organizers of this event, the competition is dedicated to the upcoming holiday of Tu B`shevat, otherwise known as the New Year of Trees.

More than sixty children of different ages participated in the tournament. Given the different levels of skill in playing chess, the tournament coordinators divided the youngsters into several categories, according to their respective chess levels.

Gennady Gutman, who is the Head of the Chess Club but is more famed as an international chess grandmaster, spearheaded this initiative. “The tournament has been very interesting for everybody. It was attended by many bright young chess players from Dnepropetrovsk, such as Vladislav Rappaport. The winning individual in the tournament among newcomers to chess was Konstantin Tkachov,” commented Gennady Gutman.

The grandmaster gave the youngsters an encouraging talk. “Most of all, I am pleased with our regular chess players who have proven themselves to have the best hand. I would like to give honorable mentions to Daniel Korban and Samuel Levin, though the winner in this category was Yermak Petrovskiy”.

The Chess Club, the Jewish Community Center and the Jewish community of Dnepropetrovsk express their gratitude to Liana Basina for his concern about the development of the chess club and for providing excellent prizes and entertainment for this particular event. The Jewish community of Dnepropetrovsk is a solid member of the Federation of Jewish Communities of Ukraine.
