FARMERSVILLE-A chess team has made it all the way to a statewide competition, now they are looking to raise funds to help get them there.

The Farmersville Chess Club — which combined two teams from the Snowden and Freedom Elementary Schools last month — will hold a rummage sale from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the Freedom Elementary School at 575 East Citrus Drive.

The team took a regional championship held in Parlier last month, topping a field of 80 individual players and eight teams.

After an impressive showing at a national championship last year where the then, Freedom Kings chess team took fourth place, the team decided to set its goals higher.

They have been raising money since the beginning of the school year, said Sandra Carbajal, whose son Benjamin is on the team.

“These kids work hard,” Carbajal said. “Each tournament they are one of the top 10 teams.”

The 20-member team is still $2,000 short to fund its trip to the state competition on April 21.

Charter buses have been paid for, but the team does not have enough money to pay for its participation in the tournament.
