It’s amazing how in the starting position of the problem, if the black rook was on h2 instead of g2 how much more of a defense black can put up. One square can make all the difference!
1. Rf7!! Threats Rg7+ Kh8 Nf7#. 1. … Rg1+ 2. Ke2 Rg2+ 3. Kd3! Ne6 Enforced to move that knight. Or Rd2+ Kxd2 Be3+ Kd3 delays by two. 4. Nh6+! Kh8 5. Ng6# Because Nf8 was moved, was the point here. I think I saw this one recently….
Rf7 seems to do the trick. If black checks twice white gets to d3. Meanwhile, he is threatening Rg7ch and then Nf7 mate and Nh6ch followed by Ng6 mate and black cannot defend against both – can he?
Rf7:
–Ne6, Nh6ch, Kh8, Ng6 mate
–Rh2, Rg7ch, Kh8, Nf7 mate
Rf7!
No bishop or pawn moves make any difference to the threat of Rg7+ Kh8 Nf7#
The rook can check on g1, but the king can eventually hide on c4.
That leaves only knight and king moves.
If Kh8 Rg7! and there is no defense to Nf7#
That leaves only knight moves, however none of them work:
Nd7 Nh6+ Kh8 Ng6#
Ne6 Nh6+ Kh8 Ng6#
Nh7 Nh6+ Kh8 Ng6#
Ng6 Nh6+ Kh8 Nxg6#

Rf7
Rf7 wins!!
Rf7 is the move!
Rf7 followed by Rg7 followed by Nf7+ checkmate
White plays 1. Rf7 threatening to play 2. Rg7+ and 3. Nf7#
Black can avoid this particular mate by playing 1. .. Ne6 but then gets mated just as quickly by 2. Nh6+ Kh8 3. Ng6#
Black can also postpone the inevitable by giving desperado checks with rook and bishop:
1. .. Rg1+ 2. Kc2 Rg2+ 3. Kd3 Rd2+ 4. Kxd2 Be3+ 5. Kc2 Kh8 ( .. Ne6 6. Nh6+ Kh8 7. Ng6#) 6. Rg7 a3 7. Nf7#
1. Rf7 (1. … Ne6 2. Nh6+ Kh8 3. Nf7#; 1. … Nh7 2. Nh6+ Kh8 3. Ng6#) Rh2 2. Rg7+ Kh8 3. Nf7#
Rf7
1. Rf7!!
Threats Rg7+ Kh8 Nf7#.
1. … Rg1+
2. Ke2 Rg2+
3. Kd3! Ne6
Enforced to move that knight.
Or Rd2+ Kxd2 Be3+ Kd3 delays by two.
4. Nh6+! Kh8
5. Ng6#
Because Nf8 was moved, was the point here.
