Four decades ago, James Rohr was busy making moves as a member of the chess team at St. Ignatius High School. Now, he’s using some of that strategy to maneuver around the nation’s banking fallout.

With his bank’s purchase of National City Corp., the chairman and chief executive of PNC Financial Services Group is once again involved in his hometown.

Rohr, 60, grew up in University Heights. His grandfather and father ran a famous downtown Cleveland restaurant from 1911 through the 1960s.

For more than 30 years, Rohr’s Restaurant operated from 1111 Chester Ave., close to what is now the National City headquarters building. The restaurant was eventually demolished to make way for the Erieview urban revitalization project.

Rohr left Ohio to earn his bachelor’s degree from the University of Notre Dame. He returned to add a master’s in business administration from Ohio State University in 1972.
