For years, universities and colleges across the country have awarded chess scholarships to young talented individuals. With schools like UTD and UMBC leading the way in recent years, many of our young players now get a chance to go to college. Two of the recent notable entries to this list are UTB and Texas Tech University.
According to the NY Times and the list compiled by Gregory Alexander as well as the College Chess Committee, there are several dozens schools offering chess scholarships today, from partial to full scholarships. I fully support college chess and as I have stated many times, college chess is the key bridge between scholastic and adult chess.
One of my goals is to get many more schools to offer chess scholarships. I will be in Las Vegas for the National Open, the Susan Polgar World Open Championship for Girls as well as the Susan Polgar World Chess Challenge for Boys. One of my schedule activities is to give a lecture and some of the topics that I will be discussing are chess and education, college chess and how to get schools to offer scholarships or more scholarships, chess marketing, PR and promotion.
Thank you for helping college chess. You have my vote and so does your team.
I agree that college chess is very important. You’re a true ambassador of chess.
It seems like 99% of the chess scholarships available are from Texas. It would be great to have some more diversity in chess scholarships around the nation in future years. Also another area to consider Susan would be more chess courses and classes in colleges and universities. I know that UTD has some online chess courses and that is about it. Chess is a very important game throughout chess history. I am currently reading David Shenk’s new book “The Immortal Game” which is the best book on the history of chess and its influences on various civilizations and cultures. Maybe this could be a subject for students to take in colleges in future years?

Texas Tech is noted for public art. Every new building on campus must include funds for public art. I am sure that Paul will feature many more of these wonderful pieces in future blogs.
