Adam Weser, a junior at Jericho High School, was one of five high school students nationwide to receive a 2008 Scholar-Chessplayer Outstanding Achievement Award from the U.S. Chess Federation. The award recognizes excellence in academics, chess, leadership and community service.

“Some things come easy in life, but chess is something you have to work hard at,” said Weser, who has an expert-level chess rating of 2105. A master rating is 2200. “I’m lucky enough to have a lot of patience and natural ability.”

Weser began playing chess at age 3 and started competing in tournaments at 6. During the past decade, he has consistently been ranked in the top 15 nationwide for his age group and is a two-time National Scholastic Chess Champion and a New York State and New York City Scholastic chess champion.

Most recently, he tied for sixth in the USCF’s National High School Chess Championship in Atlanta. He currently is the highest-rated player on Long Island younger than 21.
