Chess Masterpieces: Making a hardware chess set from Lisa Suhay on Vimeo.

Because I can’t get enough chess sets donated to our free summer camp for at-risk children (160 kids this summer!) here in Norfolk, Va., my son Zoltan, age 17, helped brainstorm a solution.

We read the book “Chess Masterpieces: One Thousand Years of Extraordinary Chess Sets.” by Dr. George Dean and saw the gambit from Fabergere to sets created from household items.

This is Zoltan’s first attempt after a trip to Home Depot. It turned out to be too expensive. So this is now a one-of-a-kind. Back to the drawing board. Once we get it both right and affordable the camp chess players will each make their own set to keep. The Best is Yet to Come…
