SCOTLAND’S population of a little over five million makes us the 113th biggest country in the world.

Although we have not been a participant in football’s World Cup since 1998 we actually punch above our population weight with a ranking of 43rd of FIFA’s 208 national teams. Chess is another truly world sport, with 158 (over 170 according to FIDE) FIDE member countries of which Scotland is ranked 59.

Scotland’s future sporting prowess will be determined by its young players. Fourteen-year-old Ian McDonald of Aberdeen has soared to the top of the age rankings after becoming the youngest winner of the East of Scotland title, scoring an unbeaten 4/5.
