This year, as well as last year, we are focusing on the young people before and during the tournament. We have now started with chess lessons for young pupils in our region.

It is clear that the interest in chess is rising in Norway in all age groups, and we are excited about the commitment and passion among both young and old ones.

Several of the newly converted chess players will participate in to the School Chess Tournament while the international stars are playing for the gold.

More than 1200 pupils from 5th – 7th grade, from over 30 schools in the municipalities of Stavanger, Sandnes, Gjesdal and Time, will during the spring 2014 be taught to play chess at school.

The teachers are young local players who have participated and won the youth championship in Norway. By using these local young talents in teaching we hope to inspire the young students to continue playing chess and to be active in the chess clubs in the region.

Same time with the Norway Chess 2014 super-tournament there is another important tournament organized at the at The Science Factory in Sandnes. Several hundred young players have the opportunity to sign up for this year’s school chess tournament, which will take place on Friday 6th of June.
