TANZANIA Chess Association (TCA) has organised an open international tournament named Spicenet Tanzania Open Chess Championship (TOCC) 2013 to be held in Dar es Salaam next month under the World Chess Federation (FIDE).
TCA vice-chairman Joe Anea told reporters in the city yesterday that the tournament will be held from June 14-16 at the Golden Jubilee Tower and will involve players from Tanzania, Kenya, Zambia and Uganda.
“There will be a total of five winners with the overall winner receiving 1mil/-, the runner-up getting 500,000/- and the third, fourth and fifth placed pocketing 300,000/-. The rest will get a consolation prize of 100,000/- each,” said Anea.
The tournament is sponsored by internet service providers, Spicenet Tanzania Limited (STL). On his side, STL director Vinay Choudary said they have decided to join efforts with TCA to ensure that Tanzania shines in the tournament.
“We have decided to support this game in order to ensure that it is promoted and eventually introduced to a large number of people through schools, colleges and universities with the aim of building a good national team,” he said.
Chess is a two-player strategy board game played on a chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight by eight grid and it is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. It is managed by FIDE, which organises Chess Olympiad every two years.
