The Susan Polgar Foundation / SPICE, the Lubbock Convention and Visitors Bureau, and the City of Lubbock just placed 2 permanent giant chess sets inside the passenger terminal at the Lubbock International Airport (one on each end of the airport).
These sets are for the passengers to use. Information about SPICE will also be placed at these locations. Next to me is Mr. James Loomis, Assistant City Manager / Director of Aviation at the Airport. He is responsible for making this project happen from the city/airport end.
Lubbock was named the 2008 Co-Chess City of the Year (with Tulsa) and Texas Tech University was named the Co-Chess College of the Year (with UTD).
Special thanks to Dr. Rich Rice for helping put the sets and boards together. Special thanks to the Lubbock Convention and Visitors’ Bureau and the Susan Polgar Foundation for donating the giant sets and boards.
Are these the first ever giant chess sets on displayed at an airport?
Good Job Susan, very good job. We the Munoz family are proud o your efforts.

Wonderful!
How did you convince the city and the airport to do this? Nice job! I have never seen anything like this at any airport.
Lubbock will become the next Reykjavik.

Now all you need are giant chess clocks…
Congratulations. All we have to do now is make sure no one walks off with the giant pieces.
