Chess Camp is Cool And at The Montclair Co-op

We met Steve Moctezuma, left, last weekend in Upper Montclair. He was doing a rockin’ chess demonstration on Valley Road. I was wary. I always assumed chess was for super brains. I figured my head was too dried up, and my kids were definitely too young.
I was wrong.
Steve convinced me to sit down at his portable chess tables with my 4-year-old son Soren and his 6-year-old twin sisters Annabelle and Estelle. Within five minutes, he had us playing a form of chess with pawns. Talk about fun! I was shocked at how easy it was to get started. The game is like checkers on crack. We were so into that we bought our own set right afterward at Montclair Stationary.
Steve, an engaging character armed with wild hand gestures and crafty duct tape, was promoting his upcoming chess camp at the Montclair Coop. It’s just $80 per week per kid for an hour and a half of chess, Rubik’s cube and other games. My kids are begging to go (and Steve agreed to take my youngest, an incoming kindergartener).
