Lineas Baze is an expert chess player.

He has won three state titles and is ranked 28th in the state, according to the U.S. Chess Federation.

Now, at 52, he’s going to try his hand at the senior title.

“I’ve met so many people that I wouldn’t have met otherwise,” Baze said about the game.

He’s built lifelong friendships through chess and gained some clients at his law practice at 335 W. Cortland St.

Baze also runs the Jackson Chess Club, which meets at Cottage Inn Pizza, 1208 W. Michigan Ave., at 7 p.m. Thursdays. There is no cost, and the group welcomes newcomers.

The age range for the group has varied from 12 to 90, he said.

“You’ve got to do it for the love of the game,” Baze said. “It’s hard to make money at it unless you are a grand master or have published books.

“It’s been a good hobby.”
