Chess and Checkers House

CHESS SERIES (Sunday) The Chess and Checkers House in Central Park has been used for just about everything but chess and checkers — it’s been a visitors’ center and a card shop — but Renée Yarzig, who runs nonprofit chess programs, is trying to return it to its original purpose. At each event in her Summer Chess Lecture/Simul Series there, running monthly through August, a chess champion will give a talk about the game and then take part in what is called a simul: boards will be set up for participants, and the champion (this time it’s Irina Krush, who has the rank of international master) will move from board to board, playing one move at a time. But while the simul is limited to the first 30 players with a rating of 1,000 or more who register, families can enjoy their own games at the house’s 24 stone tables.
