I always strongly believe that chess can help children a great deal in many areas, especially math and science. Here is another article about chess and math:
Chess an ideal teachers’ mate

About 1,500 math teachers attended the 2006 Colorado Council of Teachers of Mathematics Annual Conference at the Colorado Convention Center Sept. 28-29.
During one of the breakout sessions, I explained to teachers how chess overlaps half of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for elementary school students and why the game is a great teaching tool because it holds the student’s attention.
Besides the obvious link to math, chess also teaches children sportsmanship and patience. The student can apply the critical-thinking skills learned through chess in business later in life.

Chess is great for kids.
What exactly is the obvious ” link to Math?
frankly spoken, there is NO obvious link between mathematics and chess, besides counting and the special geometry of the chess board
Games of chance with dice and cards, etc.,can better teach coping with probablity. Chess is not at all like this. If you want children to learn chess, tell and show them that it is a great game which will give them pleasure as long as they live. That is a certainty and sufficient.
If you want children to learn math and science, teach these well. They are beautiful enough without needing gimmicks.
to the 3 and 4 comment (especially the 4th comment)

to the 2nd comment make an afford to find out..you might learn something

Then why are chess players so bad at math and science?
Dear Hoddy, I am 2.
I have an engineering degree in aerospace engineering and 2 masters degrees (Computer Science and MBA) In my life I have studied Mathematics in College for over 10 semesters. I am also a candidate master so I know a bit about chess. I have dabbled in chess programming and worked in the area of Artificial Intelligence for a few years.
Could you tell me what sort of effort I should make?
Else could you please ellaborate what the obvious link is?
Statements like “besides the obvious link to mathematics…” etc are so casually thrown about by many people without giving any thought to its meaning that it can become quite annoying.
Both mathematics and chess have their beauty. But it is best to leave it at that without making such meaningless remarks.

You work in chess and mathematics and what you do is wonderful and great…
I think you have a little plateau vision problem..you need to open the plateau in your brain or mind that lets you see that what you do is very much linked together. Good for you now just open that third eye and that invisible link will appear..
oh and do it with fun…
maybe play some nice music (bagpipes are good)
