Chess event keeps it friendly

Baseball has Little League, and football the Pop Warner program for youth.

Now, thanks to a township teacher, young chess players in South Jersey have a series of “friendly” tournaments aimed as much at whetting their appetites as honing their skills.

“Most tournaments are for players who are rated,” said organizer Dan Herman, an English teacher at Cherry Hill High School West. “A lot of students are intimidated by that. This is to get more students involved at more of an intermediate level.”

Still competitive

On Sunday, the first of five tournaments for students in grades three to eight was held in a conference room at the Cherry Hill Library.

From noon to five, close to 100 students locked horns.

For their efforts some received awards.
