Icelandic Grandmaster, Hannes Hlífar Stefánsson became the Icelandic Chess Champion yesterday. This is the 12th time Hannes receives the title.

Hannes fought a duel against Björn Þorfinnsson as they were equal with 8 wins after 10 rounds. Hannes could have secured the title in the 10th round, but he lost against Héðinn Steingrímsson and Björn won his brother Bragi.

The Icelandic Chess Championship took place on the 20th floor in one of Iceland’s tallest building, Turninn in Borgartún.

Hannes and Björn played two games of chess in the end and Hannes won 1.5 vs 0.5 in very exciting games.

The Icelandic Chess Championship is now 100 years old and Hannes is the most victorious ever with 12 championships of the last 13 times he competed.

Björn’s success however brings him one step closer to the grandmaster title.

Hjörvar Steinn Grétarsson and Héðinn Steingrímsson were equal in 3-4th place but Hjörvar received the bronze after points-calculations.

Lenka is the Female Champion for the 5th time

Lenka Ptácníková became the Icelandic Female Chess Champion for the 5th consecutive time. Jóhanna Björg Jóhannsdóttir and Elsa María Kristínardóttir were 2nd-3rd. Jóhanna got the silver and Elsa the bronze.
