CHAMPION CHESS PLAYER- GIRISH KOUSHIK

Chess is a mind game and has a very rich tradition in our country. With the achievements of World champion Vishwanathan Anand, the game has gained popularity in our country. Our city’s chess whiz kid Girish A. Koushik, taking part in the Open National Under-13 chess tournament being played at Pondicherry at present is currently in the second position with 8.5 points from ten rounds. In the tenth round, he beat K.Praneeth Surya and plays his final round today. He is our Star This Week.

Top-seeded Girish plays against Ghosh Diptyan of West Bengal in the final round and a win will ensure him the crown.

In the previous round, he had wins against Rakesh Kumar Nayak, Thamankar Viraj, Vasanth Ruba Varman, Manush Shah, Saurabh Mandal, Rohan Ahuja and Prajwal Gupta. He drew his second round game against N.V. Vishak and his only loss was against Aravind Chidambaram in the 7th round.

Girish recently won the Boys U-14 title in Parsbnath Common-wealth Chess Championships at Delhi from May 9 to 19. Overall, he finished 18th in Open category with 8 points from 11 rounds. In the final round, he beat Swayams Mishra of India. Maletin Pavel of Russia and R.R. Laxman of India tied with 9 points each but the former’s better tie-break score of 65.5 helped him to clinch the title.

Earlier last week, Girish became the youngest player to win the Karnataka State Open FIDE-rated chess tourney held at Mangalore. He followed it up by winning the State Rapid Chess title also.

The 12-year-old former World Under-10 champion, Girish Koushik has made everyone proud with his feats in the chess scene. Girish was presented the prestigious Ekalavya award for his feats by the Government of Karnataka in Bangalore recently. Coached by his father Arun Kaushik, a former Mysore University chess player, Girish has been making rapid strides in chess.
