Awsome. Magnus made some brilliant sacrifices at the end there to get the final advantage! The last game with black will be a tough one though. I hope he play a “normal” defence with black, as he has tried some rather complicated positions when playing black so far…
Thanks for posting this, Susan. Apparently, “NHL.com” is legal at the company, presumably because everyone here loves hockey, but any chess site is not. This one works because it does not have the word “chess” contained in the URL. (Good thinking!)
Honestly, the tactical ability of this kid is amazing. To borrow an expression from the former Secretary of State, he “smoked out” Aronian.
Nice effort by both players!!!!
Right away, one notices the youth of Carlsen, but that he is trying to look impressive.
Both the conduct of the chess play, and in the serious dress he wears.
His opponent’s dress might be viewed by many as “unsportsman-like conduct”. It is difficult to tell in the photo, but it looks like no tie on the opponent.
Both individuals did not bother to wear the suit coat though. Was that too difficult for them?
If they read this, it is not meant to be a condemnation, just that there is work to be done in the area of chess image that Carlsen may be good material to work with on the question.
KosmicEggburst, you have obviously not seen much of Carlsen earlier, have you? And are you just trying to impress Susan here, as she want a proper dress code?
Magnus is just a teenager, and his father Henrik has tried to let him be just that. And as far as I know teenagers don’t wear suit and tie unless they are in a wedding or at a funeral. At least not in Norway. In conservative countries like USA and England this might be more common, but not in Norway. Not even at the posh schools.
Notice that Magnus wears his shirt outside of his trousers… He is not trying to anyone, he just tries to live up to the “standard” set by others, but fail to impress, obviously. 🙂
This is surely the best of the 8 candidate matches. Back and forth, it will be interesting to watch the final game (and tie-breaks) if necessary. I am sure we can expect the unexpected tomorrow.
It seems neither player will go down quietly. Now this is the type of match which can stir up excitement for the game of chess.
He wears his shirt outside of his trousers because it looks much better that way.
Personally I am rooting hard for Aronian, although I am deeply impressed by Carlsen’s confidence. Brillinant play and game.
About the Armenian dress code: I really don’t think that one should pressure Aronian in that matter. A good point was made that one should take into account the dress code of the culture of the player’s country. I guess personal history of the player and his economic background influences his pick of clothes and taste, and comfort in them. Flexibility is the word. It is too rigid to force same standards of dress code on all players. Still, the talk about dress code is valuable.
This is the best game I watched since, Topalov’s win over Sasikirian in Mtel. In fact, both games resemble each other; in both the game was decided in a creative attack with few pieces left on the board. A game to remember.
I am rooting hard for Aronian though.
