One win away from overtaking Anand as world #1…
“he will do it, no doubt ! grey hair and all !!!”
Well, considering his mature play the hairs on his head should really be grey. 😉
Nisi played very badly today. Still a BIG Congrats for Magnus!!
Seems everybody has been playing very badly against Carlsen lately. No doubt a certain amount of luck is involved for Carlsen, but that only helps him because he is such an incredibly strong player.
I’m sure we’ll see a regression, but there can be no doubt that he is still improving. How far he goes is anybody’s guess. Anand himself says it is just a matter of time before Carlsen becomes WC.
My only worry is that Carlsen will achieve ultimate success to easily/early and get bored with Chess.
This is getting crazy….Bravo!
he is making HISTORY !!! right now before our EYES !
SPLENDID !!!
everybody from the chess world should be happy …
the byzness people are, no doubt ! and the little kids too …
and myself me I
Way to go Magnus!

I don’t understand. Mr. Carlsen has made so many chess players unhappy, sad, mad, angry, disappointed, etc. by winning them and taking their rating points from which these people live on. Why should we promote a person like that?
Hi Glenn, your Chess Flash is by far the best PGN viewer. Thank you so very much.
Carlsen is quite good. H has as good a chance as anyone (outside the four finalists in the current cycle) of being champion in 2011.
I predict that he will lose the final match in 2011 despite having some time earlier got the highest rating…
Apparently this tournament will not be included in Fide’s July list. That is sad. I think FIDE should be able to update their list weekly and this event should be rated in July,so Carlsen is most probably seen as official number one. Otherwise he may lose some rating points till next list and may not be number one. I am Anand’s fan and compatriot, but I still think Carlsen should get his due.

Kamsky beat him
good thing for Topo
Carlsen will not be world number 1 this list merely from this tournament being included unless he wins 2 more games atleast- there is no guarantee.
Incidentally if he does score +2 he will not only be virtual world number 1, but virtual 2800+ !
The thing is – if he wins the next game he will be virtual world number 1- but then he will drop back again towards the end of the tournament unless he wins a second (for each loss he will need another win too obviously)
There are currently 6 players within about 20 points of Anand- it is so close. We might soon have 6 players over 2800 the way Carlsen, Ivanchuk, Morozevich, and Topalov are playing lately (along with the obvious candidates Anand and Kramnik)
Incidentally, Anand has been in the world’s top 3 since January 1997, so he is in some danger of dropping out the top 3 for the first time in over a decade with 5 players so close behind him!
Morozevich is world number 4 just over 10 points below Anand- so Anand despite be world number 1 (and world champion) is in great danger of getting his lowest ranking in 12 years soon. Anand needs to be ultra consistent to keep his record more than ever- plus the chasing pack are fast risers and can suddenly jump 20 points in a tournament- so any one of the top 6 could theoretically leapfrog him in one event.

No worries Anon! If Magnus gets bored of Chess he could always go into medicine and cure cancer! He is that smart!
Anand worried about not being no 1 on the rating list???
Don’t make him laugh!
He wasn’t till last year anyway, but even as no2 or 3 he’s the man to beat for Mr. Magnus. Look at their head-to-haed record and praise Anand.
Why would someone who plays good chess be good in something like medicine? It is completely irrelevant, playing good chess does not equate being smart, and neither does the opposite.

I know both Internationally recognized chess masters and medical doctors my dear ioannis. Both talk and think exactly alike.
All are genius’ in my book.
Knowing them lets me know how little I myself know.
Mr. Carlsen could easily acquire a college degree just like Gata Kamsky or Paul Morphy.
Let history be your guide!
I know living, breathing, examples of brilliant human beings.
GM Polgar is one of those briliant human beings, of course. 🙂
pure luck

pure luck”
It is pure luck you get to keep your job at Burger Hut ignorant Anon.
Leave the Carlsen analysis to the experts.
My dear anonymous, perhaps I should have said “not necessarily equate”, of course a good chess player could also excel in academia, or in medicine. However, in this respect Kamsky is the exception, most chess GMs do not even have University degrees. This does not mean that they are not smart, but let’s not nullify what a University degree means. I know many cases of GMs and IMs who totally destroyed their lives because they couldn’t do anything else other than play chess. Read Topalov’s interview who said that he wouldn’t know what do if he retired from chess, because that’s the only thing he knows how to do in his life. And instead of sucking up to GM Polgar, I advise you to watch carefully the National Geographic documentary about her, which indicated what really happens inside a world class GM’s brain. Pattern recognition does not necessarily mean being smart. It may or it may not. But it’s not a proof, I hope you get my point.
Ioannis,
I don’t think you really check statement that most GMS don’t hold university degree.
Just look up the number of masters and GMs playing the top boards for Harvard and other top colleges.
The amount of work to get a Bachelor degree is pale in comparison to the effort required to reach GM status.
Dear polo mateo,
Please take the top-20 super-GM list and tell me how many bachelor degrees you see there.
I never questioned the gigantic amount of work that one needs in order to become a chess GM. One may also need gigantic work to build a building on his own. My objection and opinion is that this amount of work does not necessarily equate smartness. The skills that are needed or developed through chess may not be the same ones needed in order for someone to make a proper medical operation for instance.
Ioannis,
Most top 20 super GMs will not have a college degree because they had obviously enough talent to pursue chess as full time profession. It’s like saying Bill Gates does not have a Bachelor degree.
You should look instead at the number of Masters that got their College degree or became very successfull once they stopped pursuing chess as a career.
Many top chess players are seriously overweight, so I wouldn’t call them smart in every way, and more so not in becoming a doctor! No egocentrics at my sickbed please.
