It can transpose. Hugh Myers, in “exploring the chess openings”, showed that 1 e4 e5 2 Nc3 Nf6 3 a3 can lead to 3…d5 4 exd5 Cxd5 5 Dh5. This is the same as the scotch 1 e4 e5 2 Nf3 Nc6 3 d4 exd4 4 Cxd4 Dh4 !?, which is supposed to be bad because of 5 Nb5. Here, with colours reversed, and with a3 played, the “strong” move Nb4 is prevented. Black has a bad position.

I think that Magnus is not trying to psych anyone out. I think he basically just wanted to play as Black against Ivanchuk. Essentially this allows Ivanchuk to play as White but with the colors reversed!

NEW CHESS COACH FOR GM CARLSEN
Henrik Carlsen, father of chess world championship aspirant Magnus Carlsen of Oslo (Lommedalen), Norway, today announced the selection of a new chess coach for his son to succeed former world champion Garry Kasparov.
Carlsen has enlisted the services of the first world champion, Dr. Adolf Anderssen, late of Breslau, Germany. Anderssen’s services will be mediated by the family of Robert Rollans, who from 1985 to 1993 organized a match between world championship contenders Viktor Korchnoi of the Netherlands and Geza Maroczy of Hungary.
“It was felt that at this stage of Magnus’ career, when he is still under 21, he can benefit not only from a more “Romantic” approach to the game of chess, but also improve his play in closed positions. Anderssen’s sublime expertise in the latter has not often been recognized, and this is why we selected him over the second world champion, Paul Charles Morphy. We were also looking for an improved approach to the French Defense.”
Sessions began on March 1st in Zurich, Switzerland, with Mr. Korchnoi also attending, in advance of Carlsen’s play in the annual Melody Amber championships. Carlsen in his first game unveiled an opening specially prepared for him by Dr. Anderssen.
On his son’s former association with Kasparov, Henrik Carlsen observed: “We were irked by the world media continually referring to my son as `Garrlsen.’ This way if it becomes `Carlssen’ there is very little difference.”
It is like playing 1.e4 e5 2.Qh5. You are seeking to gain a psychological edge by insulting your opponent. “I can beat you with an obviously inferior move!”. Rude chess.
Maybe Magnus is studying Adolf Anderssen 😉

It was just announced that Carsen was dismissing Kasparov as his coach, it is hard to believe the decline was so dramatic and quick.

Wow, Big Carlsen in the foodsteps of some of my early games- unfornately non of them is in the databases. I play this move a couple of times right after I´d learned the chessrules. Up to now didn´t know how imaginative I was in those good old days! It was only the lack of a good coach that I do not became a IGM 🙁

Carlsen lost both blind and rapid to Ivanchuk. So much for firing Kasparov and playing 1. a3.

If he gets bored of chess at this age he might as well quit altogether.
Hopefully he just intended to have some fun at playing chess and not so much at his opponent. He’s not obliged to take these games at amber as if they were of the utmost importance.
It would be very strange if he indeed believes that Ivanchuk is an easy win for him, or anyone else.

Hope Carlsen does not go the Kamsky way with a dominating dad calling all the shots and ruining the child!
