Severn team takes top prizes in state chess competition

Severn School mathematics instructor Tom McNamara has taught at the Severna Park landmark since 1987, but it wasn’t until 11 years ago the Pasadena resident found a hobby he could share with his students.

He became the school’s chess coach. Today, dozens of glittery trophies line the tops of the cabinets in his classroom.

“The club started out small,” he conceded, “but it took off in two years. We won the state high school title in 1999 and 2000. We took the middle school title in 2003 and 2004. Now those middle school players are in high school.”

And, the team is still winning.
