Indian chess wizard in a candid talk

The world’s number 1 international chess player and India’s pride, Vishwanathan Anand talks about his latest moves to TIMES NOW’s Nikhil Kalan. Viswanathan Anand is not someone who is overwhelmed by success or disheartened by failure. But his win at Linares Morales Chess Tournament has surely brought Anand a great sense of achievement. It helped elevate India’s first Grand-master to the numero uno position in the official FIDE rankings for the very first time.

Nikhil Kalan: How did you feel on winning at Linares and becoming World no. 1?

Vishwanathan Anand: Well it was fantastic, a day before the last round i realised that if i draw the last round i will become World number 1, in fact even if i had not won the last round, i wolud have been the World number 1, most likely. But i forced myself not to think about the numero uno tag. So at the end of the tournament it was a double treat for me, as i had won the tournament and also become the World number 1 player.

The Chennai-born chess wizard does not believe in resting on his laurels as he aims to add the World Championship title to his World no. 1 ranking- a feat he has yet to achieve in his career.

Nikhil Kalan: What is your next target? Winning the World Championship in Mexico in September 2007?

Vishwanathan Anand: It will be a 8 player tournament. The difference between the top player and the lowest player will be very narrow. I think one will have to ride the tournament, as each day will be unpredictable. No player can be ruled out or ruled in, but having said that, two or three players could stand out as better ones.
