We thank all well wishers from around the world who sent emails to FIDE Honorary President Florencio Campomanes who celebrates his 80th birthday on 22 February. Casto Abundo, who is in Antalya, Turkey at mobile tel. +90.5394852613, reports from Antalya Anadolu Hospital that Campo is in traction with a head, neck and chest brace due to multiple cervical spine fractures and is under heavy sedation. In photo, orthopedic surgeon Dr. Burak Germen (right) and neurosurgeon Dr. Hakan Ozsuer adjust the brace as Campo grimaces in pain. Psychiatrist Dr. Ibrahim Ates is treating Campo for post trauma depression.
Here is the full content from FIDE.
I do not understand how Campo maintained power in FIDE. I thought everyone wanted him out long ago.
Just more corruption. The world has to wait for some corrupt people to die of very old age.
I would have more sympathy for Campo if he had left chess 30 years ago.
Was he the guy who helped Karpov by ending the first match as Kasparov began to win games.
yeah..
Kasparov hated this guy for that.
& that confirmed what everyone knew,
that the Russians control FIDE & they would stop at nothing for their champion elect to remain as WC.
the good die young.
the bad just keeps going and going.
the worst, well. campo continues to get FIDE freebies.
And, what the hell i will spend them free FIDE monies too until i die, if it was me.
but, campo knows of all the dead chess players he hurt all this years who wait to kick his ass. he ain’t leaving so soon.
This guy was so corrupt, he amassed millions during his FIDE reign, he did the same thing during the manila olympiad for which he was convicted criminally in the Philippines.. I guess this is karma for him
Wow, lots of uninformed opinions and mis-information from some on this blog.
For instance, the first poster is either uninformed or he is trying to mislead others.
It was Kasparov who first requested that Campo suspend the first Karpov-Kasparov match. Only later did Karpov make the same request (while Karpov had a lead of multiple wins).
Why didn’t the first poster, so confidently critical of Campo, mention that fact?
And despite the poster’s misleading “I thought everyone wanted him out long ago” comment, the fact is Campo has been out of power in FIDE for well over a decade.
Karma, yeah. Just a pity it takes so long to come round.
Why on earth should Campo get treatment for depression? What about all the depression this guy’s actions have caused chessplayers over the years?
