Cuban Bruzon Wins Chess Open in Colombia

HAVANA, Cuba, Dec 17 (acn) Confirming his status as favorite Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzón achieved his second consecutive crown at the JAHV McGregor Chess Open, in the Colombian city of Bogota.

Bruzón (2692 Elo points) accumulated eight units in nine rounds, with two draws and seven wins, the last one achieved on Sunday against local Cesar Zuluaga.

Bruzon´s performance earned him 9.4 Elo points, which will be official next January 1st when he will also collect other points by winning the recent AES Cup in the Dominican Republic.

Both results will take Bruzon to the 2700 ELO club exactly with 2704 units, according to a live report, he should climb some 14 positions in ranking and he will be 42nd in the world.

His victims in the Colombian city were Icelandic Gudmundur Kjartansson, Chilean Rodrigo Vazquez and his compatriots Rolando Alarcón and Omar Almeida.

Peruvian Emilio Cordova also had a good performance and ended second with 7.5 points after a draw, the final day, against Cuban Isan Ortiz, who with half a unit less was sent to the 12 position.

Colombian Humberto Rojas finished third, by better tiebreak, with 7 points, similar figure to Cuban Yusnel Bacallao, who ended 14th.

This third version of the event brought nearly 400 players and although its rounds were reduced to nine after announcing 10 in the call, it became a luxury attractive to the fans in Bogota´s Niza Boulevard.
