Cuban Remains on Top in Edmonton Chess Festival

Cuban GM Lazaro Bruzon reached 13 points and remained as sole and undisputed leader of the Edmonton Chess Festival, in Canada, with only four rounds to play. Bruzón defeated on Thursday, with white pieces, the most talented local representative, Eric Hansen, in just 33 moves of an English opening and this was his fourth win in five games, he has only achieved a draw against his compatriot Rodney Perez in the previous round.
The latter is currently in the standings with nine units after signing peace with Canadian Richard Wang in 37 moves of a Queen’s Gambit.
People attending this contest yesterday also saw the draw between Canadian Robert Gardner and Israeli Victor Mikhalevski, while English Nigel Short beat the also local Maxin Doroshneko and Edward Porper did the same when facing Dale Haessel, they both are from the host country.
Today´s matches will be Bruzón-Porper, Hansen-Wang, Mikhalevski -Haessel, Doroshenko -Gardner and Perez will have a tough rival in Nigel Short, who was world runner up in 1993.
Standings after five rounds: Bruzón (13 points), Rodney (9), Wang (8), Porper (8) Short (7), Hansen (7), Doroshenko (6), Mikhalevski (6), Gardner (2 ) and Haessel (1).
