Chess: Mary Ann wins Asian bronze India Blooms News Service

Manila, May 26 (IBNS) : In a dramatic style WGM Mary Ann Gomes of Kolkata won a Bronze medal in chess at the Asian Continental Women Championship, which concluded Sunday at Philippines.

After three consecutive draws, 7th seed Mary remained at second position with 5.5 points at the end of 8th round Saturday. Three players were leading table with 6 points each.

On 32nd move Mary made a minor mistake, which gave her Chinese opponent WIM Ni Shiqun a positional advantage.

At this point twice national champion of India went out for all out attack and ultimately clinched a dramatic victory with black piece to win Bronze.

Mary finished this tournament unbeaten with 6.5 points. She had to compete with six Chinese players, out of which WGM Huang Qian and WGM Tan Zhongyi became champion and runners respectively with 7 points each.

With her fantastic performance Mary earned 23 rating points and thus crossed 2400 points barrier. Her FIDE rating is now 2410. With 4 “Male” IM norms in her kitty, Mary will become IM (male) title holder from June FIDE list.

It is also to be noted that last month she won Bronze at World Team Chess championship.

Another Indian in this championship, Somya Swaminathan (5) failed to clinch a spot among top 15 by loosing the concluding round.

In men category Indian representatives made pathetic show, only B Adhiban got 5th position to earn a place in World Title qualifier. As many as seven Indians, leading by K Sasikiran, were in this tournament. (Mary is returning on Tuesday)
