December 6, 2007 — In the end, they’re choosing principle over their principal.
Parents of 10 of 13 members of the renowned PS 70 Bronx chess team have decided to forgo tomorrow’s national championships in Houston because the school’s principal is barring their coach.
At an early-morning protest in front of the elementary school yesterday, parents said the decision to keep their kids home was a heartbreaker, but that longtime coach Jonathan Alejandro merited their support.
“We only want to go if Mr. Alejandro goes,” said 9-year-old Emely Herasme.

The kids got screwed. Too bad the principal doesn’t get it.
One day the kids will regret this!!
(There are better ways to protest)

What do you know cowardly anon from 9:51?
You probably don’t know what greatness tastes like. These children have moral principles. Their principal is a gutless beaureacrat who hates the teacher union. She is creating a conflict of interest by punishing students for the “crime” of being a teacher union member by the chess coach.
These children are learning how to fight injustice, the same type of institutional injustice that GM Polgar fought and continues to fight to this very day!
These children are the future of chess and I am proud to say they are following GM Polgar’s example brilliantly!
