1. Rd6 +-
1.Nxa7! Rb7 2.Qxb7 Rxb7 3.Nb5 and White is a pawn up in the endgame. with a 3 to 1 majority on the Queenside, and a superior pawn structure. Enough for a win.
Kamalakanta
kamalkanta, you missed Rd6
Nd6!
1. Rd6!!
1. Rd6!
1Re6 wins
1.Rd6 piling on the pinned rook.
If 1… Bxd6 2.Nxd6+ snags the queen.
If 1… Rc7 2.Nxc7+ Qxc7 3.Qa8 up the Exchange with a winning attack.
White wins material any way you look at it after 1. Rd6
Then 1. .. Bxd6 leads to the loss of the Black queen:
2. Nxd6+ Rxd6 3. Qxb7
And 1. .. Rg5 is no improvement:
2. Rxc6 Rxb5 (2. .. Be7 3. Nc7+) 3. Rxe6+ fxe6 4. Qxb7
1. Rd6 wins more than just a pawn. If either the Rook or Bishop take on d6, then 2. Nxd6 will eventually leave White up a Queen vs. a rook in the endgame.
Rd6! and no hope for black.
1. Rd6 Bxd6
2. Nxd6+ Rxd6
3. Qxb7
1. Td6 Bxd6 2. Cxd6+ (2. … Txd6 3.Qxb7) 2. … Kd7 3.Cxb7.
Nxa7 Qxa7 2. Qxc6+ Ke7 3. Qd6+ Ke8
4. Qd8++ I think
1. Rd6 Bxd6 (1…. Rxd6 2.Qxb7) 2. Nxd6+ Rxd6 (2…. Kd7 3.Nxb7) 3. Qxb7
Rd8+ – Kxd8
Dxf6+ Le7
Rd1+ Kc8
Dxf7
A possible improvement on Kamalakanta’s early published and goodlooking idea:
1. Nxa7! Rb7
2. Qd3! Be7/Qa8/Qb8 (only moves to address mate threat)
3. Nb5 (Qxh7 Rg5 preventing Nb5 looked dangerous to me)
In addition to having won a pawn, white now has fine activity in d-file. Black’s double f-pawn is a great hindrance for him.
Rd6 gets a rook and the decisive advantage
1.Rd6 Rg5
(1…Rxd6 2.Nxd6+ Bxd6 3.Qxb7)
(1…Bxd6 2.Nxd6+ Rxd6 3.Qxb7
2.Rxc6 Be7
(2…Rxb5 3.Rxe6+ Qe7 4.Rxe7+ Bxe7)
3.Nd4 Rd5
4.Rc4
I think Rd6 is strong and leeds to a win.
I think should be good.
1. Rd6
If
1. …. Rc7
2. Nc7+ Qc7
wins a Rook for a Knight.
If
1. …. Bd6
2. Nd6+ King moves
3. Nb7
wins a Queen for a Rook.
If
1. …. Rd6
2. Nd6+ Bd6
3. Qb7
wins a Queen for a Knight.
Any other move loses full Rook or Queen.
First I thought either 1 Rd6 or 1 Nd6+ can be played with same result. However after 1.Nd6+ Bxd6 2. Rd6 is countered by 2… Rc7 and white has achieved nothing. So correct move is
1.Rd6 Rc7
2.Nxc7+ Qxc7
3.Qa8+ Ke7
4.Rfd1 Qxd6
5.Qxa7+ Ke8
6.Rxd6 Bxd6
7.Qa8+ Ke7
8.Qxg8
with Q vs B.
The rook is pinned to the queen for any other move but Rc7. There are several plausible looking ways to take advantage of this- Na7, Nd4, Nd6, and Rd6. Of these, I prefer Rd6 since this keeps the king from coming to the rook’s defense, and this also opens up the possibility of playing a later Nd6 forking the king and queen. Let’s look at the other possibilities first to see why they are weaker moves
1. Na7 Rc7!
2. Qb7
This is forced since the white knight is hanging at a7 now, and if white takes the time to retreat it, black captures at f3 since the g-pawn is pinned by the rook at g8. White will be up a good pawn, but he can do better here. Also, with 1.Nd4, black will again play Rc7 keeping good drawing chances. Now, let’s look at a hasty 1.Nd6:
1. Nd6 Bd6
2. Rd6 Rc7
And white again has to deal first with the queen that is hanging at f3. After 3.Qxb7, white is definitely better, but the edge is hardly decisive. Now, let’s see why 1.Rd6 is superior:
1. Rd6 Rc7?
2. Nc7 Qc7
3. Qa8! Ke7
4. Rfd1 and black is going to lose more material just to prevent the mate. At move 1, he does marginally better by taking at d6:
1. Rd6 Bd6
2. Nd6 Rd6
3. Qb7 winning a queen for a rook, and keeping a strong initiative.
If I were black, I think I would try a move like 1. …Rg5 just to see if I can get white to take with the queen rather than the rook at c6:
1. …..Rg5
2. Qc6? Qc6
3. Rc6 Rb5 and black only loses the exchange. However, white takes with the rook at c6 to gain maximum advantage:
2. Rc6! and the threat of Re6+ keeps black from taking at b5. White should win a full rook.
No it’s Rd6! I’m proud of myself that I seen this lol
Wow- I did miss 1.Rd6!
I usually look at it for a few seconds, without a board, but I feel that this one should have been obvious to me, even without a board.
Thanks!
