Government Decision: 70 Million NOK to 2014 Olympiad
Just a few minutes ago, we received the wonderful news that the Norwegian Government will support the plans for a 2014 Chess Olympiad in Tromsø. The Norwegian Minister of Culture, Ms Anniken Huitfeldt, proposes that the government will fund the 2014 Olympiad with 70 million Norwegian Kroner (USD 12 million). This is a huge step forward for our plans to give the chess world a unique experience in August 2014. More on the marvelous news in the Norwegian newspapers VG and Nordlys.

Special thanks to Kjell Sjøbrend for sending us the breaking news.
Here is a brief translation of the press release from AP:
Thus, there is much to ensure that Magnus Carlsen, who on 1 January will be history’s youngest no. 1 at the official chess ranking, will compete for an Olympic gold medal on home turf in 2014.
– Chess is a great sport, and the government would provide funds for application to organize the championships in Norway. It is great that the Norwegian Chess Federation chose Tromsø as candidate city.
There has been a major local involvement to get this in place, “said Anniken Huitfeldt, according to NTB.
The statement came in connection with a meeting between Magnus Carlsen and the Sports-/culture minister in the afternoon.
It’s a great week or Norway.
Susan im listening to R.Kelly steppin! right now !wblk – Tune in! I thought the U.S. suppose to win this event to celebrate Obama’s Administration to show us off! Susan, They “mixin me up”!!1 hahahaha.
Just goes to show how little FIDE really matters.Star Power Matters! The public will always support the best……not grovelling with second rate champs (Not saying anything bad about Anand…he’s great)..but there you go!
Errr…FIDE just introduced rules about fixed dates for certain events. The Olympiad has to be in November. There are massive financial penalties for holding it outside the fixed dates. What is happening about that?
Anon thats a good blog but its such a low blow man! Why go beneath the belt on a guy? I mean nobody beat Fischer in a match if ya really wanna go low! So none of them are really champs! Im not hitting Karpov and the boys below the belt, Am i? hehehe. Susan help meeeeeeee!!!!!!!!!!!
I am wondering how poor Susan copes with such quasimodic posters as Lionel Davis – I can’t remember reading a coherent sentence from him – his poor usage of English put aside – still nothing makes sense except the guffaws.
Hey, Lionel is just “keeping it real!”
He is the resident Afro-centrist chess reporter who frequents this blog. I like his cool style and his interest in chess!
Don’t be a hater because a brotha’ loves chess!
Word!
I love Las Vegas!
