Brazilian Chess Championship

The 75th Chess Championship of Brazil is taking place on 7-16th December in the beautiful city of Porto Alegre, capitol of the southernmost Brazilian state Rio Grande do Sul. Five of the country’s seven Grandmasters have qualified for the 12-player final (Jaime Sunye Neto and Henrique Mecking are not playing).

Top seeded is Giovanni Vescovi, rated 2635, who is holding five national titles. Six-times champion Gilberto Milos and four-times champion Rafael Leitao are also attending. A number of young lions have recently sprung forth, most notably Aleksander Fier, who already was champion in 2005, at the age of 17.

The organizers, Confederação Brasileira de Xadrez, Federação Gaúcha de Xadrez e União Israelita Porto Alegrense, have provided R$ 15.000,00 in the prize fund. Time control is 90’+30” from the move one.
