Meet Quincy, our new 3 month old puppy. He was adopted 2 days ago at a local animal shelter in Lubbock, TX.
Thank goodness for the humane society, SPCA, rescue organizations and hardworking, dedicated animal shelter volunteers! Without them, there is no telling how many more dogs and cats would die each year. Dog rescuers and cat rescuers scan animal shelters constantly, looking for puppies and kittens of all ages whose time at the animal shelter has almost run out due to overcrowding, and giving them a second chance before they are euthanized.
They all rely on volunteers and donations to keep their efforts going. Many rescues use a network of foster families, who keep pets for adoption in their own homes while they assess their personalities and often provide any necessary training. Rescues are very careful to make sure their adoptable dogs and cats go to the right homes. Each organization has its own application and screening process for potential adopters.
In addition to protecting the pets, this process is designed to make sure you end up with the right pet for your family. Since pet rescues really get to know their dogs and cats for adoption, they are able to match you up with the perfect companion for you. Volunteers also follow up with you after the adoption to make sure everything’s going well.
They can help you get through any rough spots by offering training tips and other advice. Adopting from a pet rescue group has another benefit: if, for some reason, things don’t work out with your new friend, most rescues will take the pet back, saving you a lot of heartache and headache.
Rescue groups come in all shapes and sizes. Like a humane society or SPCA, some rescue groups have a physical animal shelter facility, where adoptable dogs and cats are kept until they are get homes. Other pet rescue organizations use a network of dedicated foster families, volunteers who care for the dogs and cats in their own homes. Some rescue groups only take dogs and cats from public animal shelters; others take in strays and accept pets relinquished by their owners.
There are even groups that specialize in senior or disabled dogs and cats. Some specialize in small dogs, some rescue only giant breeds. There are thousands of rescue groups devoted to a particular breed of dog or cat, too! At the heart of the rescue world, however, are the all-breed pet rescues. These are rescues that take in all kinds of pets of various breeds and ages, and concentrate on saving as many lives as possible.
All rescue groups have a few things in common. They are made up of extremely caring, passionate volunteers who work tirelessly to save pets’ lives. Unfortunately, they all spend their days cleaning up the messes of irresponsible dog and cat owners, and trying to prevent new messes by educating the public about the responsibility of dog and cat ownership and the importance of spay and neuter. Even purebred dogs and cats end up in animal shelters because they were purchased at a pet store or from a dog breeder, and then they were no longer able to be cared for. Perhaps someone moved or died, or the pet grew too large.
There are many reasons a pet ends up in need of a home. All rescue groups, SPCAs and humane societies deserve our most sincere gratitude for making this world a better place for dogs and cats!
Pet Adoption is the loving option!
Susan,
I believe euthanization is one of the worst practice. Hitler, euthanize people. our current society euthanize dogs and cats which is cruel. There should be a mass campaign to abolish this behaviour.
Hello Susan
Boogie and Quincy seem so cute!

“I believe euthanization is one of the worst practice. Hitler, euthanize people. our current society euthanize dogs and cats which is cruel. There should be a mass campaign to abolish this behaviour.”
Abortion is one breath away from euthanasia. Your god Obama plans to pay for the abortions of the world. The earth mourns for the deaths of the millions of potential chess world champions who are put to death in their mother’s womb!
Susan,
what is your opinion regarding this?
“Susan,
what is your opinion regarding this?”
There is no opinion. Just the fact that abortion is killing human life. If you kill unborn baby, you kill a human. If I kill you, I kill a human. No difference except baby in mother cannot protest her murder.
When a breeder sells a puppy he must get a signed agreement to neuter or spay the dog. There are simply too many puppies being produced.
Shelter dogs are no bargain. I have heard from people who paid $450 for a shelter dog who was terrible. They took the dog back but got no money refunded. not a penny. Then went out and purchased a good puppy from a solid honest good breeder. The shelter takes the problem dog back and sells it to someone else. Problems follow problems.
The best dogs come from the dedicated hard working good breeders. They need your support. Have your puppy spayed or neutered.
Also do a lot of research on picking your breed. avoid things like labradoodles which are mongrel crosses that make no sense and produce all kinds of different dogs.
Get a good purebred of a good house dog.
Bye the way in USA there is a lot of cheating going on with so called rescue dogs. A lot of sellers are really buying puppy mill dogs and selling them as rescue dogs. You are actually supporting puppy mills when you buy a rescue dog. Be careful of ordering dogs. A lot of shady people in the business. Get a puppy from the breeder and meet the dogs parent’s and make sure their temperment is very gentle.
Avoid rescue dogs that are coming from out of state. That is a clue they are puppy mill dogs. They sell them without papers so you can not prove anything.
I would never consider a rescue dog. They are almost always dogs with trouble and a problem dog and the previous owner got rid of the dog because of the problems. Get a good puppy.
All dogs sold in pet shops are puppy mill dogs no matter what they try to tell you.
Try to avoid new breeds which do not breed so true on temperment. It takes a long long time to get good temperment puppies that will grow up to be well behaved dogs.
There are only a couple of good breeds of dogs for the average home and family life.
At the risk of being pilloried here, I have to say I am indifferent to animals. I don’t own any pets. That said, I do applaud the efforts of rescue organizations.
Oh and by the way, while I abhor the idea of abortions, I do believe that they should be legal. While I do believe that life begins at conception, I recognize that not everyone shares that view.
Illegal abortions only mean abortioons done under the table by unqualified people. The number of abortions doesn’t go down if you illegalize it. Just look here in the Philippines.
“Oh and by the way, while I abhor the idea of abortions, I do believe that they should be legal…”
When you die and go before God, You go ahead and repeat this in front of Him at your Judgement. I don’t think He will share your belief or be sympathatic to your support of abortion.
“It were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he cast into the sea, than that he should harm one of these little ones.” Luke 17:2
If one doesn’t repent, Hell is to pay for all who support abortion. Eternal fire without hope of salvation, forever and ever.
