The second annual Lubbock Open Chess Championship was held April 18 at Monterey High School. It was once again a great success.

Around 90 players took part in this year’s city championship. Some players came from as far as Albuquerque, N.M., and Odessa to take a shot at winning the prestigious titles.

Local TV station KTXT was on hand to film the event and interview a number of young chess players, teachers and coaches.

The 2009 Lubbock Open was sponsored and supported by the Susan Polgar Foundation, Texas Tech, TTU Heritage Consortium, SPICE, Texas Technology Store, iBookSwap, Knight Raiders, Lubbock Independent School District, Region 17, Chick-Fil-A, One Guy from Italy, Science Spectrum, Visit Lubbock, etc. There were more than 20 raffle prizes ranging from coupons to Chick-Fil-A to five digital chess clocks courtesy of iBookSwap.

Special thanks to Dr. Jim Brink, Peggy Flores, Dr. Hal Karlsson, Jerry and Beatrice Perez, Dr. Rich Rice, Tim Winders, Chase Watters and the Knight Raiders for supporting this wonderful event.
