Dubai: Dr Sulaiman Al Fahim, the newly elected president of the UAE Chess Federation, is all set to provide a big boost for the sport.

“My immediate goal is to open more chess clubs in the country. This will increase the number of players and lead to the creation of a strong UAE national team,” said Al Fahim to Gulf News.

“We will appoint professional coaches in these clubs and unearth talent. My aim is to create two national teams of equal strength so that we will be able to field a formidable team in international matches. Very attractive incentives will be given to outstanding players,” added Al Fahim, who was the vice-president of Abu Dhabi Chess Club.

Al Fahim was a member of the Dubai Chess Club during his school days and went on to represent UAE in junior and world championship events.

“Soon we will see professional players playing in our chess clubs. The prize money of all tournaments will also be increased. We will also set up ladies clubs to attract more women into the game. Ladies clubs are being set up in Abu Dhabi. Ajman and Fujairah,” he said.
