Belize Chess Club & BNYCF hosts family Chess Day

Young chess players from all over the country tested their wits at a Family Chess Day hosted by the Belize City Chess Club in collaboration with the Belize National Youth Chess Foundation (BNYCF) at the St Joseph’s School in Belize city on Sunday, December 20.


Nine year-old Ivan Pixabaj of Silk Grass Stan Creek won first place in the 10 year and under age category, with five victories. Kareem Jenkins, 9, of the Cayo Chess Club, won second place with four victories. Justin Chacon 10, took third place, Omar Pulido,10 took fourth place and Stephan R won fifth place, each with three victories


Ivor Pixabaj, 12, from silk Grass Stann Creek won first place in the 11-12 years age category, with five victories; while Dwayne Rodriguez, 11, of Belize City took second place with four victories. Dolores Sho, 12, of the Stann Creek district had four victories also and won third place, while Jason Argueta of Belize City won fourth place and Montel C took fifth place with three wins.


Alfred Awe of the Supreme Pawns Ecumenical Chess Club from the Stann Creek district won the 13 year- and -over age category with five victories. Juan Vernon, 16, of Belize City took second place with four victories. Christian Burns, 13, won third place, Javier Lisbey, 13, won fourth place and Akeem Jenkins, 13, of the Cayo Chess Club took fifth place, each with three victories.


The tournament organizers had also laid on art materials to entertain for the players who were eliminated in the early rounds, and prizes were also awarded for the best paintings and best clay sculptures. Good sportsmanship awards were also presented in each age category.
