The Enquirer • January 29, 2011

Stan Beckwith’s lifelong contributions to the game of chess were recognized recently with his induction into the Michigan Chess Association Hall of Fame.

The Battle Creek man joined the chess club at Lakeview High School in his youth and kept up his connections with the game.

He competed in world and national tournaments over the years, and traveled to Rekjavik, Iceland, in 1972 to witness the classic world championship match between Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky.

These days he organizes the annual Great Lakes Chess Open, to be held April 29-May 1 at McCamly Plaza Hotel.

He also has for years volunteered his time to teach chess to young people at area schools.

He’s currently working with students at Pennfield Middle School and later this winter will teach blind children how to play.
