Two Washington County high schools finished among the top prizewinners at the Oregon High School Chess Team Championships, held March 11 and 12 at Sherwood High School.

In the varsity tournament, Beaverton School District’s School of Science & Technology won the Class 2A division, while host Sherwood finished second in the Class 5A division.

Five-member teams totaling 215 students competed in five rounds over two days, with match scores used to determine standings. In each five-board match, a player winning his or her game scores one point for their team, while a drawn game counts half a point for each player’s team.

The tournament was not sanctioned by the Oregon School Activities Association, but OSAA classifications based on enrollment size allowed divisional winners to compete against schools of their own size.

For the overall varsity tournament, Cottage Grove High School in Lane County won this year’s state championship, while Crescent Valley High School of Corvallis was runner-up and defending 2010 champion Lake Oswego High School placed third.
