Barbosa, Gomez and Dzhumaev share lead

Long and intense battles were the order of the fifth round before Oliver Barbosa, fellow Filipino John Paul Gomez and veteran Uzbek Marat Dzhumaev stopped the talented Indian players to share the lead with perfect scores in the 10th Parsvnath International Open chess championship here on Tuesday.

Barbosa stopped a passive Ashwin Jayaram in 37 moves, Dzhumaev needed 45 moves to stop Vaibhav Suri and Gomez battled for 106 moves to overpower a fighting Diptayan Ghosh.

M.R. Lalith Babu, who is awaiting the confirmation of his Grandmaster’s title, and M.S. Thejkumar won with the black pieces to jump to 4.5 points

DIPTAYAN SHOCKS BITOON

Earlier in the day, the fourth round saw Suri, playing black, stun fifth-seeded Russian Andrei Deviatkin on the top board after another youngster Diptayan Ghosh brought down 12th seeded Filipino Richard Bitoon.

Five others among the top-10 GMs also signed peace. Aleksej Aleksandrov, Martyn Kravtsiv, Mikhailo Oleksienko, Abhijit Kunte and Henrik Danielsen, seeded two, three, eight, nine and 10, played out contrasting draws.

In fact, young R. Bhuvanesh followed the draw against top seed Sandipan Chanda on Monday by pulling off a similar result against Kravtsiv.

Two other Indian GMs, Deepan Chakkravarthy and R.R. Laxman, were also held.

Fifth round: Oliver Barbosa (Phi, 5) bt Aswin Jayaram (4); John Paul Gomez (Phi, 5) bt Diptayan Ghosh (4); Vaibhav Suri (4) lost to Marat Dzhumaev (Uzb, 5); Vishnu Prasanna (4) drew with Abhijit Kunte (4).

Bitan Banerjee (4) drew with Mark Paragua (Phi, 3.5); Shreyans Shah (3.5) lost to Lalith Babu (4.5); Neelotpal Das (4) drew with P. Karthikeyan (4); Shailendra Bajpai (3.5) lost to M.S. Thejkumar (4.5).

K. Ratnakaran (4.5) bt Akshayraj Kore (3.5); Martyn Kravtsiv (Ukr, 4) bt Saptarshi Roy (3.5).
