Barbosa defends title in Kuala Lumpur tourney

MANILA, Philippines – Some of the world’s best chess players have confirmed their participation in the DYTM Raja Nazrin Shah International Open Chess Championship at the Olympic Sports Hotel in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on September 17-23.

Filipino Grand Master (GM) Oliver Barbosa is out to defend his title, but will face stiff competition from GMs Sergei Tiviakov of the Netherlands, Thomas Luther of Germany, Wong Meng Kong of Singapore, Tahir Vakhidov of Uzbekistan and Nguyen Ang Dung of Vietnam.

Around 40 foreign players, including numerous International Masters, along with 10 Malaysians have confirmed their participation.

There are only officially 30 places left, but that does not include provisional entries by a few other GMs and the players promised by the chess federations of the Philippines, Indonesia and Vietnam.

Aside from Barbosa, other Filipinos competing in the six-day tournament are GMs Mark Paragua and Darwin Laylo, National Master Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. and Franz barretto.

A FIDE-titled and rated event, it will be played over nine rounds using the Swiss System and the time control will be the standard FIDE 90 minutes for the first 40 moves, fllowed by 30 minutes plus a 30-second time increment per move for the rest of the game. By Marlon Bernardino
