A good round. Caruana’s luck finally ran out on him, and he lost a game that was never going anywhere good for him. Adams seemed to be pulling his punches a little, his Knight drop into e4 looked premature, but after White’s tactical oversights at moves 44 and 45, that was that. White’s positional play looked pretty weak in this game, but he wasn’t lost till then.
Fridman dumped his Knight onto c4 at an inopportune moment, and suddenly the World Champion had something. A series of exchanges let White win material.
Meier’s win, in the positional style of Smyslov or Benko of the old days, struck this observer as the best chess of the round. Admirable play by White.
Go Georg!
