Black Q wants to check from h1 and mate.Clearly R at g1 is a nuisance.
1.Rg2+ Kxg2
(1… Kh3 2.Qh1#)
2.Qh1#
I had thought Saturday puzzle would get me engaged for a couple of hours.Disappointed.
Rg2+ followed by Qh1 mate. Standard clearance sac.
1 rg2 mate in 2
Rg2+! (took me 3 seconds) !!
Rg2+ !! with mate to follow by Queen h1 ++
1. … Rg2+
For either 2. Kxg2 or 2. Kh3, Qh1#
First: Black would have liked to play 1. … Qf1?? to get control of the g2 field, but lacks tempo to do so, since it would give white 2. Qg5+ with at least eternal check (black looses directly if K goes in e file).
Then I looked at:
1. … Rh1+(?)
2. Kg2 Qf1+
3. Kf3 Qd1+
4. Kg2!
All other moves loose directly, but this invites to draw by repetition. How can black avoid this now?
This was where I found:
4. … Rh2+!
5. Kxh2 Qh1#
But of course mate in 2 is better than mate in 5:-)
1. … Rg2+!!
2. Kxg2/Kh3 Qh1#
is the correct solution to this puzzle.
I would not have expected Rg2+ from Bob to be published that early…
I was about to say: “Black has no other win than Qh1#, but how then to bring queen in front of the rook?”
I got the following and didn’t bother to look further:
1. … Rh1+
2. Kg2 Rh2+
3. Kf3 Qd1+
4. Qe2 QxRch
wins
But of course mate in 2 is better!
“I would not have expected Rg2+ from Bob to be published that early…”
Neither did I. When I checked back and saw it published, well, normally that means that it’s wrong. Freaked me out, but it’s so simple I couldn’t see anything wrong with it.
