Giant chess pieces have been unveiled as the latest addition to public art in north Down.

The three sculptures – each 1.3m tall – have been named ‘The Pillars of Holywood’ and were unveiled by North Down MP Lady Sylvia Hermon.

They were created by sculptor Tim Shutter in London.

Holywood Arts Trust, which has aided a number of public art installations, commissioned Mr Shutter over 120 other entries.

He said: “My artwork takes inspiration from the works of the renowned 20th century Holywood naturalist and historian Robert Lloyd Praeger and his sister, the eminent sculptress Sophia Rosamond Praeger.

“I have created a small fantasy of an alternate reality, a Holywood within Holywood, where the gateposts of the big houses, long since gone, are appropriated for miniature buildings.”

The Arts Council NI National Lottery Public Art Programme donated £15,000 of the costs, with 25% matching funds from sponsors including the Holywood Chamber of Commerce, North Down Borough Council, and the Kerr Art Group.

Deirdre Thomas, chair of Holywood Arts Trust, said: “We are thrilled with The Pillars and know they and our public arts programme will assist with the regeneration of Holywood as a vibrant town.”
