Qxh7 Qxh7
Bxe6 fxe6
Rf8+
1.BxN wins a at least a piece outright.
if 1…PxB then 2.QxR! and mate to follow by Rf8 if black responds with 2…QxR.
if 1…Rb2 (attempting to deflect the white queen)then 2.QxR.PxB 3.RxB! wins a rook & bishop.
oops! i messed up the order of the moves…… 🙂
After Bxe6, then Nf3 check may appear to be a better response for black, virtually forcing white’s f rook to be exchanged away. Thus,
Bxe6 Nf3 check
Rxf3 Bxf3
at first appears to stop white’s “winning attack”. However, white has
Qxc7 Ka8
Qc8 Qxc8
Rxc8 mate
1.Bxe6! – of course …
[and now not 1…fxe6? 2.Qxh7 Qxh7 3.Rf8+ Be8 4.Rxe8# the „normal“ suicide line… also bad is 1…a6? 2.a5 Nf3+ 3.Rxf3 fxe6 4.Q5 Bxd5 5.axb6 Bxf3 6.bxc7+ Kc8 7.Qc5]
but what do you think now about that tricky, “filthy” 1 … a5! and suppose – it might have been a blitz game?!
Of course not 2.Rxf7? Rxf7 3.Bxf7 Nf3+ .. -+
and after 2.Bxf7 ?! there would be hair-raising complications
2… Nf3+
3.Rxf3 Bxf3
4.Qxc7+ Ka7
5.Nc3 (5.Qc5 Rxf7 6.Rb1 Qh3 7.Qxb6+ Ka8 8.Qxa5+ Kb8 9.Qd8+ Ka7 10.Ne3 Bxe2 11.Qb6+ Ka8 12.Ng2 Qf3 13.h3 Bf1 DRAW)
5…Rxf7
6.Qxf7 Qh3
7.Ne3 Rb2
8.Nb5+ Ka6
9.Qh5 Rg2+
10.Kf1 Be2+
11.Ke1 Qxe3
12.Qh6+ b6
13.Nc7+ Ka7
14.Qxb6+ Kxb6
15.Nd5+ (you need to find that “family check” some whre above in your calculations …
2.Bc4 is obviousely a weak move, too
it meets 2. …Nf3+ 3.Rxf3 Bxf3 and black is in good mood.
Much better is 2.Bb3
2… Nf3+
3.Rxf3 Bxf3
4.Qxc7+ Ka7
5.Bc4 f5
6.Qc5 Rc7
7.Qxc7 Qh3
8.Ne3 Bxe2
9.Bxe2 Qxe3+
10.Kf1 Rb2! DRAW
(ok ok 8.Kf2 Qg2+ (8…Rb2 9.Ke1 f4 10.Qxa5+ Kb8 11.Qc3 Qh4+ 12.Nfg3 fxg3 13.Qxb2 gxh2+ 14.Kd2 Qxg4 15.Qb6 Bxe2 16.Qd6+ Ka8 17.Bxe2 Qf4+ 18.Kc2) 9.Ke1 Rb2 10.Qxa5+ Kb8 11.Nfg3 f4 12.Qc3 fxg3 13.Qxb2 gxh2 14.Kd2 looks much better 🙂 )
The very best move seems to be
2.Bf5! Nxf5
3.Qxf5 Rb3
4.Qc2 Rhh3
5.Rxf7 Qc8
6.Nfg3 and it is time to say good bye …
a very nice one by Levon Aronjan – and by the way – sometimes me and my Fritz! (which helped me a lot in that “draw finding” variations to avoid some best moves by white – hehe – have too much time … )
sincerely anonymous
anonymous,
It looks to me that:
1. Bxe6! a5!?
2. d5!
prevents all the nastiness on f3
I dont know. I can NOT understand anything that you are trying to say.
for example you start with
1. Bxe6 of course
and then a super long line of moves starting from
2… Nf3+
but what is blacks first move.
this is totally confusing and impossible to understand. you have a lot of stuff here but do not tell us what your computer program fritz said.
by the way. Susan has requested that we do not use a computer program. so please do not give us computer analysis. that would make this entire exercise a waste of time. and we learn nothing if the computer does all the work.
lots of anonymous around here.
1. Bxe6, fxe6 2. Qxh2
The correct move is Bxe6 fxe6 then Qxh7 Qxh7 Rf8 and mate to follow. Aronian did play Bxe6.
Best wishes,

Oops.
I thought
2… Nf3+
was a white move. it is a black move. so things are even more impossible to know what you are talking about.
what is blacks first move and whites second move.
this is insane. good thing you are anonymous.
sorry it got answered while i was typing it up.
now susan’s answer is easy to understand.
cool problem Susan. I did not get it but it was a good one.
anonymous, I’m not sure if your last comment was directed toward me, but I never use Fritz when solving these problems. I do miss some shots at times. I was just posting the response to: 1. … a5
Bxe6 Nf3! check
Rxf3 Rxh2!
Bd5 a5!
and black is much better.
Yes, this is a computer analysis, but I think that’s fair after the answer has been published.
anonymous,
There is a Knight guarding h2.
1. Bxe6 Nf3+?
2. Rxf3 Rxh2??
3. Nxh2
uuups, uuups – lot’s of stuff since my last visit … I’m the one posting that huge lines …
@celtic – … d5! is a very good move
@lot’s of anonymous around
– read, read, read – my post was a JOKIN’ one – a gag – a wit … dear god – chess is FUN – not WAR … – maybe my sense of humor is not compatible to your’s
@all – and about “my fritz! using” – this little petite combination starting with Bxe6 is not a fritz! one … not even 1. … a5 is a fritz! move, not to mention the FOLLOWING variations – they are not fritz! made – but fritz! proofed … it was not that easy it looks like, to find that DRAW variations after 1. Bxe6! …
but i’ve learned my lessons – thus – i’ll never be any anonymous anymore – from now on to further – i’ll be the one and only
VOHAUL
sincerly – one of my favorite sites, my favorite blogs and please be aware of my sense of humor … 🙂
