After the first six regular games, the score was tied 3-3. Then they went to 4 rapid playoff games. That was also tied at 2-2. Aronian finally won the 2 blitz playoff games to advance.
Congratulations to both players! They have given the chess fans a big thrill! I am very impressed with both of them! As I said earlier, they will be the faces of chess for many more years to come.
Chess Daily News from Susan Polgar
yes congratualations to both of them, the others who lost should have put more fight like carlsen did.
jb. best luck jusdith for next time
Tooooo bad! They both should play in Mexico. Topalov too.
I am so happy for Aronian. As for Carlsen, he is a great personality for chess and a great player. One of the reasons I rooted hard for Aronian was that he is older and if he does not make it now, it may be too late later. And Aronian is such a great player that I think he deserves to be remembered as one of the giants. Both of them though have my sympathy. Aronian, I follow for a number of years and actually seen him rising to the top. I have a lot of affection for him and for his homeland Armenia. Congratulations Levon, congratulation Armenia!!

You may not know this, but Aronian is only 25. A bit early to be putting him out to pasture.
Also I like Aronian’s personality. I had never heard him boast . He seems to be a shy and humble and gentle person. And that outward inwardness is so in contrast with his wizard like confident display at the board. I like that.
Hi,
the experience has won but both deserve to be in the next round.
They have been playing and fighting.
The normal time has been draw. The other players has made 6 draws and one of them is in the next round.
It is something wrong with the elimination rules. There are elimination systems which allow one lost match i.e. table tennis.

Pony.
remember that aronian hasnt qualified for mexico yet…
he has to beat shirov first…
shirov is very strong again..
beware…
Yes, GREAT match by both players! Lets hope they will continue to play the same exciting chess that they have in the Candidate match.

Now you see how a Match Championship for US Championship would provide so much more excitement than a tournament. Aronian and Carlsen put on one top notch show for sure. The fans went wild on ICC when Carlsen again tied up the match. You never can get that kind of reaction out of a tournament. Tournament wins are very subdued. Match games bring out the fans cheering wildly.
The entire qualification for Mexico is a mess. Mexico should have the best players. Were is Radjabov, Mamedyrov, and now where will be Carlsen.
Topalov should be in Mexico and NOT Kramnik. Mexico should be a Candidates tournament to pick the challenger to Kramnik.
Topalov does not deserve another match with Kramnik if Kramnik wins Mexico. Topalov will not have played. Why should he get the shot. The 2nd place deserves the shot more. Anand is the one to match challenge Kramnik. People do not like Topalov any more and they like Anand.
The public would have a much bigger turnout if Magnus had a championship match with Kramnik. That would light up the world big time. Topalov is of little interest compared to Anand and Carlsen now. Even Radjabov or Judit would bring much more interest.
It definitely will not be be Aronian’s last chance to qualify, because he will grow still stronger. What may happen in 2 years or a few years more is that Carlsen could be stronger than anyone else in the world. I think that we are looking at a Morphy-Kasparov-Fischer talent level with the aid of computers and the internet. I think that someone with the dual abilities of chessplayer and mentor could address what his likely potential is. She has addressed already today the valuable support of his father.

The problem with the rules is that most eliminations are designed to produce one single winner. Therefore, even if the top two players meet in the first round and one gets bumped off (as arguably happened in both the 1977 and 1980 Candidates), one of them would have been bumped off eventually, anyway.
In this case, though, we’re not eliminating to produce one winner, we’re eliminating to produce four. So any time one player is eliminated in the first round, you know it would have been possible for them to both survive the Candidates if the pairings had been different.
Good chess player, that Aronian. Good fighter too, as Danny Gormally found out.
Does anybody from top 10 ever lose fide elo?
Topalov less interesting than Carlsen or Radjabov???
You must be joking!
Carlsen will be a match for Kramnik and Topalov in future, but right now he wouldn’t be the best match for both of them.
This Aronian-Shirov must be another great match. I wouldn’t bet in any one of them.

He meant outside Bulgaria.
