Anurudha, Ranasinghe win Sri Lanka Open Chess crowns

GC Anurudha and Sachini Ranasinghe were declared the winners of the men and women’s categories respectively at the Sri Lanka Open International Rated Chess Championship held at the YMBA in Borella from 20th to 24th August.
Four players tied for the first place in men’s open event with 8.5/10 points each. They were FIDE Master GC Anuruddha, Candidate Master Chandana Wijekoon, MAN Danushka and Chamil Priyankara. However FM GC Anuruddha achieved the championship on a superior tie break score. CM Chandana Wijekoon and MAN Danushka became the 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up respectively with 8.5/10 points.
Two players tied for the first place in Women category at 7/9 points each. Woman International Master Sachini Ranasinghe and BTAY Senarath. However WIM Ranasinghe achieved the women championship on a superior tie break score. Nethmi Nirasha Gamage became the second runner-up with 6.5/10 points.
Sri Lanka Open International Rated Chess Championships that was first organized from 1972, was made internationally rated from 2006. The organizer of this event was the Chess Federation of Sri Lanka.
The tournament was 10 rounds swiss FIDE Open event with the participation of 393 players.
Mr. Upali Gunasekara principal of Royal College and the former president of CFSL was the chief guest at the event. Guests were Buddhi Panagoda (Secretary CFSL), Erosh Jayasinghe (International Arbiter and the chief arbiter of the event), Naditha Amarakoon (International Arbiter and the deputy chief arbiter of the event), Werochana Perera (International Arbiter and a executive committee member of CFSL) and Dayal Siriwardana (Treasure of CFSL).
