Williamsburg kids win national chess prize

Brooklyn has produced another team of chess champions – this one made up of preteens.

Intermediate School 318 in South Williamsburg has brought home its third national title in four years, trouncing more than 200 teams from all over the United States during a recent championship in Sacramento, Calif.

The powerhouse chess team, made up of 40 students from 10 to 12 years old, won the coveted open tournament and captured the top spot in two of three sections two weeks ago.

“We were the loudest team there when we won our trophy,” said Rochelle Ballantyne, 11.
